Texas Sheep Dog Association brings Championship back to Stephenville

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Texas Sheep Dog Association (TSDA) announced that it will once again host the TSDA State Championship Finals in Stephenville at the Pat Ashcraft Ranch. Celebrating their 41st anniversary, more than 100 dogs and their handlers will compete over four days on November 10-13 in five different classes from Novice to Open.

The dogs are judged on their ability to move a set of sheep in an open field and, depending on the class level, through a set of obstacles and into a pen. The dogs work as a team with their handlers and are guided by both voice and whistle commands. The highest scoring dog in each class will be crowned the Finals Champion. The Dog of the Year award will also be presented to the team with the most points earned for the entire trial year.

Admission to the event is free and the public is invited to attend.

“Our members are thrilled to be back in Stephenville this year,” said Stephanie Goracke, President of TSDA. “Pat Ashcraft’s ranch is a beautiful venue and we welcome the opportunity to showcase our dogs and their natural working ability to the community.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses to support the show and get their name in front of the State Finals competitors and fans. TSDA surveys show that members spend over $300 per person on restaurants, fuel, groceries, auto/tire repairs and other local services (in addition to lodging). 

The Texas Sheep Dog Association is a 501(C)5 non-profit organization, founded in 1963 at San Saba, Texas by a small group of Border Collie enthusiasts. Incorporated in 1981 with a purpose to advance and create an interest in the breeding and training of working stock dogs across Texas, TSDA seeks to build cordial relationships in the community and to promote humane treatment of dogs, sheep, cattle and goats.
